I introduced two of my friends, Jo Jones (Language Club, Loyal Subjects) and Greg Norton (Husker Du) to each other one evening at First Avenue Nightclub. I knew the two were looking to start a group and felt Jo's hard-hitting drums and Greg's bass style would be very compatible. They thought so too, but insisted they could only put a band together if I would play guitar with them. Which I did.
The three piece band, when playing in the Twin Cities, was sometimes augmented by John Clegg's East Side Horns and often used tapes of my synthesizers as backing tracks. Grey Area toured the U.S. quite extensively, especially in the South and East. As far as recording, there were two major sessions, one with Ambient Sound's Bob Cain, and the other at Pachyderm Studios with Dave Kent. A videotape was made of one of our first performances, and a recording of a show in Madison, WI was made, as well. Sadly, none of these recordings were released to the public, although there are apparently some "private" recordings available.
I imagine it will be of interest to some of the collectors out there that I finally found the time to sift through some of the many Grey Area recordings I own and have remastered them for possible future release(s).
